Hearing this perennial British classic by a top american orchestra in a beautiful recording. Of course, american brass doesn't sound like british brass, but Gustav Holst's masterpiece belongs to the main hundred orchestral pieces, which means that it is performed and recorded everywhere, even Karajan did it with the Wiener Phiharmoniker/5(96).

Ozawa's interpretation of The Planets is assuredly not in the Boult tradition, but brings a fresh approach to Holst's sole excursion into extravagance. Tempos are not those to which we are accustomed: ''Mars'' brings war at record speed and ''Mercury'' is more leisurely winged messenger than usual.

The Planets was composed while Holst was employed as music master at a school in Dulwich and at St. Paul's Girls' School. It was the first and only work of its kind that he produced; between he had written mainly choral pieces.

May 08,  · Another Boston SO account, but under Seiji Ozawa, was well received and I could go on and on. Most performances of The Planets have highs and lows, my suggestion is to try as many as you can, although I prefer interesting couplings such as Gardiner’s The Warriors, Handley’s Brook Green, and Reiner’s Heldenleben over Dutoit, Previn, Mehta /5(99).

This recording of Gustav Holst's The Planets has been mastered from etherexthazecuhawdotibantiobe.coinfoe most part the sound quality is ok but the volume of the recording is low and there is a little distortion on some of the louder parts. Wonderful music but there are far better releases out there/5(96).
