The central tenor role of Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio is known as one of the most demanding and difficult in all opera. For his first complete opera recording for Decca, Jonas Kaufmann, "the world's greatest currently performing tenor" (London's Daily and Sunday Express), delivers everything the role demands: fearless tone, peerless style, and heart-stopping dramatic intensity/5(33).

Which identifies me as not a fanatic. With Fidelio the music is, well, Beethoven. The fusion of orchestra and voice is stunning. This recording is my favorite, even though it is live and from the s. Maybe because it was the version I first heard way back last century on bargain vinyl/5(22).
