The music of Rahsaan Roland Kirk is as strong and biting as a perfectly rendered 90 proof single-barrel bourbon or some of Kirk's own intoxicant of choice. Even a stroke which left Rahsaan resisting n major deficits could not deter him from his musical mission/5(22).

Kirk's albums from the early 60's on encompass several jazz styles, though this album is primarily bop-oriented. At this time, Kirk was making his living playing R&B and several tracks have that honking, 50's rock `n' roll sound. I took one star off because the music on this CD, good as it is, doesn't sound much like his later work and is therefore not essential. Another star was taken off for the short length (under 3/5(1).

This single-disc compilation is the Rahsaan Roland Kirk entry in the Talkin' Verve: Roots of Acid Jazz series. Kirk's inclusion into any discussion of acid jazz is nothing short of mandatory, as his recordings have been used for sampling, scratching, and countless other digital dissections since the art form began. Kirk's renegade polyphonic approach and unique techniques -- which often.
